As you meander through the streets of Marrakech it is as if the world has decided this is the place to be.... and it is. One hears Berber, Arabic, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and the amazing fact is that everyone is able to communicate with almost everyone else although sign language also works.
For History aficionados, earliest records suggest it was Yusuf Ibn Tashfin who reigned from 1061 to 1106 and was the leader of the Berber Moroccan Almoravid Empire who co-founded the city of Marrakech. The Medina often called the Red City is a walled city and one of the few true walled cities left in the world and one of Morocco’s jewels.
It would be ungracious not to mention that one of the principal reasons we fell in love with Marrakech was the warmth, friendship and easy smiles of the Moroccan people, who have opened their hearts to us and made the experience of buying Riad Smara and living in Marrakech a delight.
